I could just drift...
"I could just drift, he thought, and sleep and put a bright of line around my toe to wake me." Pg 41. I think this may be a indication of Hemingway beginning to quit writing or maybe his early thoughts of suicide. This also could simply be Hemingway thinking of taking a small break from writing until he gets big idea and makes a new novel out of it.

yeah i agree it might be a way of him like taking a break towards his writing. and the line on his toe to wake him can indicate him getting a idea

Tie on His Foot? Seems Unreliable...
When i read this i immediately thought of the darker side of things... It sounds to me like the old man is tired and wants to give up. He is tired and wants a break from things, then maybe, just maybe he'll bounce back and be able to pick up where he left off. But who's to say that tying a little string to the end of the mans foot will wake him up?
