Plot twists, symbolism, nothing plainly stated, just a few tricks up Hemingway's sleeve. The Old Man and the Sea does seem to be a suicide note hidden below the surface, but you had to do some digging. Hemingway's words were like a map leading us to buried treasure, the true meaning of the story.
