The "old man and the sea" is a suicide note, but one must read between the lines and think deeper to understand Hemingway's hopeless words. Everything in the story secretly symbolizes something meaningful from his life. Throughout the story, the old man is poor, lonely, and determined, but towards the end he gets weaker and he ends up losing everything.
