The boy and his wife...???

The more I read the more I'm beginning to think that the boy represents his wife. He keeps saying that he wishes the boy was there with him. I think this ties in with his suicide note. Maybe he wanted his wife to commit suicide with him. Or maybe he wife wasn't there when he needed her.
