The old man hit him on the head for kindness and kicked him, his body still shuddering, under the shade of the stern."
Kindness...? why is this reffered to as kindess? Maybe because he put the fish out of his misery? But then he throws in an extra kick...
it makes me think the old man is a bit cruel. I just looked at this quote and kind of questioned Hemingway's intentions for using kindness, to describe the act done to the fish.
