I think this quote is saying, how many people will actually read his work. And are they smart enough to understand his writing style. Or maybe, people will not get the big picture of the story so he is better off keeping them to himself.

That thought makes so much sense 
This quote also makes it seem as though he has lost faith in humans... like there is no way they are capable of understanding his work.
