The old man was getting attacked by sharks could mean that the sharks are people and they kept attacking Hemingway on his writing saying that his work is nothing special.

I was wondering what it was the sharks could represent... i couldn't figure that part out, but i did notice that the sharks got to the old man. As they attacked the great fish he had caught, he began to regret even catching the fish in the first place. he was so determined in the beginning to capture that fish, but now as his journey goes on, he has such regret for even pursuing the fish. Maybe in Hemingway's real life, these people who doubted his writing, actually got to him, and caused him to have regrets in his career choice.
