Repetition
I noticed the repetition of the word "patches.""the sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of defeat."
"His shirt had been patched so many times that it was like the sail and the patches were faded to many different shades by the sun"
"dreaming to see the white peaks of the Islands"
"long golden beaches and the white beaches, so white they hurt your eyes"
The repetition of "white"
May be it symbolizes hope? life?
Quite a contrast to the word "patches" which usually implies something more negative.
Just a thought...

Writing ideas
Hemingway uses bait to get bigger ideas when he is trying to write and when he turns out of bait he is lost of basic ideas.
