Thoughts on the boy Empty Thoughts on the boy

Post  VivianH Wed Nov 28, 2012 9:19 pm

As I was reading the posts, several people connected the boy to representing Hemingway's wife/wives. How so? I don't understand. Can anyone explain how they came to this conclusion?

Any other theories to who the boy represents?

I don't believe him to represent the wives either.
I feel like it's too constricting- and well, I just don't see it.
I feel the boy is a personification or something that might be tangible, or may not be.
But I feel like he also represents several different things at once.
Pat said the boy could represent his will to live, and you, his love for writing.

I feel like he represents a little bit of everything.

Just not his wives.

Thoughts on the boy Empty Possibilities

So far, the boy may represent:

- Fans of Hemingway (love and devotion)
- Innocence & Youth (youthful spirit)
- An image of Hemingway that wanted to be
- Strong bonds between family (didn't Hemingway have a son?)
- Motivation/Strive to continue writing/live
