loss of apatite
The old man has little interest in food, a sign of depression. Just an observation, what do you think?

I don't think that he isn't interested in food, i believe that he simply can not afford it and pretends to be uninterested, but i could be wrong.

That sounds like a really good theory... he could just be trying to keep himself from thinking about food, knowing at the end of the night he may not have any... But I must admit when i first read this section in the story i immediately thought about depression, and how it can cause someone to self destruct emotionally and physically. Maybe the old man doesn't have an interest in food because he can't, but Hemingway doesn't have an interest because of his depression. If that makes sense.
