" i wonder why he jumped, the old man thought. He jumped almost as thought to show me how big he was." i was thinking that it has to do with someone in his family, because there were a lot of suicides in hemingway's family and he probably witnessed one of them.

"I wonder why he jumped"

This could be Hemingway questioning why members of his family committed suicide. He may have thought "Was there something I could have done to stop it?"

OR

This could be the old man wondering why the fish would jump if it knew that it was in danger of possibly getting killed. Why would it risk its life? (parallel to Hemingway perhaps?)

"He jumped as though to show me how big he was"
It was almost like it was taunting the old man, like it was trying to say, "Are you sure you can catch me? Bring it on."
