yea i agree he is trying to say that he is hoping nothing better or something he cant handle comes because he wont be able to handle it.

In this context, I thought about the fish referring to the critics in Hemingway's writing career.
"prove us wrong" made be think about how a lot of people thought Hemingway no longer had it in him. Hemingway might have thought that if he were to write a 'masterpiece' there would be always that one person to say otherwise.
