Did Hemingway experience denial of his disease during his lifetime? This could relate to how Hemingway actually felt about his depression, or his addiction.

I do agree that this was a sign of Hemingway's depression. (One of the many symptoms was thinking "I don't care anymore")
I think Hemingway was finally feeling the depression take effect on him.
