The Bird? The old man being distracted? Empty The Bird? The old man being distracted?

on page 55, The old man comes across a bird which rests on his line. That leads up to him being distracted, all of a sudden, the fish comes up.

Anyone have ideas what the bird can represent? maybe even him being distracted? Wink
